- Resistance: A resistance heater works in exactly the same way as an electric kettle. 1 kilowatt of electricity will give you 1 kilowatt of heat. It is compact and inexpensive to buy, but extremely expensive to run. Installation can be complex due to the high power of electricity required.
- Gas: This system works using either bottled or mains, propane or natural gas. It is cheaper to run than a resistance heater. Its major benefit is that it is a quick method of heating, however it is high on emissions and uses valuable fossil fuels.
- Oil: Oil heaters require a deposit tank to store the oil, as with gas, it is a cheaper method of heating than a resistance heater and is very quick. Its main disadvantage is its high emissions and use of valuable fossil fuel. Both Gas and oil are illegal means of heating in some European countries.
